What Is Career Development?

Different books have defined career development in various manner. My take on career development is below. Through my own career journey over a decade and consolidating my observations of others’ career building journey, in my view, the five pointers below are the key features of career development.

Career Development is a continuous journey, often based on the Career development plans and you can tell if your track for this journey is correct when the following five features are visible in your career building journey:

  1. As a Career Builder, you are adding to your knowledge bank ; your skill and knowledge repository is growing faster than your keenness to add new skills or gain knowledge
  2. The share of success and failure in your assignments is balanced; neither  is lop sided. It is critical to experience both success in professional career as well as failure in assignments undertaken
  3. As per your career development path or career development plan, you know you are going to achieve the next career objective. Your motivation and the will to achieve your next career objective is higher than the forces of external environment. In a nut shell, you count yourself among the career developers who know very well where want to reach in their career in the defined timeline and as a career builder you know you will reach there. This objective may be  your next promotion, a coveted assignment, acquiring a niche skill, getting nominated for the prized training program, whatever you may have chosen as your next career objective
  4. You are a powerhouse of talent and you spend sufficient time discovering and nurturing your professional talents.  
  5. You are engaged with your job and you are aware why this job is critical for your career development.
 Now that I have shared my take on Career development, let me also tell you about a career book that helps you find the secret of a successful career.

In my book I have detailed the importance of career in an individual’s life. Albeit, career is only a part of life but a very significant one.
The secret to a successful career is actually simple. Most professionals miss this simple approach and make the career journey complicated by adding various unnecessary dimensions to it.
Five assumptions that spoil Career Development – Stay away from assuming these:
  • That the organization you are employed with will take the responsibility of your career development
  • Your Boss will anticipate your career aspirations and create opportunities for you in the company to advance your career
  • A Superlative performance appraisal rating is an indication of career advancement in the company
  • You are being groomed for the next level if you are nominated for a ‘development’ program
  • An addition in the current port folio is an indication that you are valued in the organization

While the above five assumptions may be be positive indications but not always and you must watch out that you do not assume these career myths. Career is self- reliant and that you must take the reins of your career in your own hands. Remember, You build your career and no one else hence the decisions about your job, your work place, your skill development, your career objective ned to be driven by you. You must not depend upon others to realize your career aspirations.

Career development is not always linear. You need to see the opportunity in every movement

In my experience with professionals I have observed most people perceive only an elevation in grade/level  to be career development or career advancement.

Can a lateral movement be a sign of Career development? Most professionals seem to ask this and my answer to them is:

YES, more often than not, a lateral movement is a strong indication of career advancement and career development opportunity.
