Training in public speaking is not a matter of externals–primarily; it is not a matter of imitation fundamentally; it is not a matter of conformity to standards at all. So, what is Public Speaking? What are the qualities of a good public speaker? To answer these questions, let us understand what is Public Speaking?

Public speaking is public utterance, public issuance, of the man himself; therefore the first thing both in time and in importance is that the man should be and think and feel things that are worthy of being given forth. Unless there be something of value within, no tricks of training can ever make of the talker anything more than a machine, albeit a highly perfected machine-for the delivery of other men’s goods. So self-development is fundamental in our plan with this you can get closer to becoming an effective public speaker, if you already aren’t one.

The second principle to be an effective public speaker lies close to the first: The man must enthrone his will to rule over his thought, his feelings, and all his physical powers, so that the outer self may give perfect, unhampered expression to the inner. It is futile, we assert, to lay down systems of rules for voice culture, intonation, gesture, and what not, unless these two principles of having something to say and making the will sovereign have at least begun to make themselves felt in the life.

The third principle, which will help you overcome your fear for public peaking, we surmise, will be; arouse no dispute: No one can learn how to speak who does not first speak as best he can. That may seem like a vicious circle in statement, but it will bear examination.

Many teachers have begun with the how. Vain effort! It is an ancient truism that we learn to do by doing. The first thing for the beginner in public speaking is to speak–not to study voice and gesture and the rest. Once he has spoken he can improve himself by self-observation or according to the criticisms of those who hear.

Some tips for on how to improve Public Speaking:

Acquiring confidence before an audience: Consider your audience as carton character and you the director. Sounds Funny right!!! I really mean it. It sounds weird, but you can try doing it once. This will help to speak with a lot of valor as you know that you are the best in the auditorium and other have come to listen to you.

Practise, practise and practise, in speaking before an audience will tend to remove all fear of audiences, just as practise in swimming will lead to confidence and facility in the water. You must learn to speak by speaking. This is one trick that almost every good public speaker does to get over the public speaking fear

Don’t be monotonous: Monotony means tedious and lacking variety if you go by the dictionary definition. So when it comes to speaking, it’s all about speaking with a lot of modulation, asking questions, making meaningful statements, referring to quotes etc. Speaking only the subject in the same tone might pull down your performance. Therefore, reach out to the audience by brining some innovations in your speaking style.

We obviate monotony in dress by replenishing our wardrobes. We avoid monotony in speech by multiplying our powers of speech. We multiply our powers of speech by increasing our tools. And by tools I mean, the art of story telling, giving examples, adding humors, showing video clips and so on…

Bring efficiency through changing the PITCH: It works just like music. When you sing a song, you always try to emphasize on every line or word that you sing by changing the pitch of your voice. This helps you in bringing melody and the rhythm. Likewise, when you speak in front of the public they want to hear some wonderful narrations from your end, and that come only when you speak by changing your pitch. Believe me it works!!!

The power of pause and silence: It is said that silence or pause speaks volumes for you if you back it up with some strong body language. Hence, please ensure that you take correct pauses while speaking. This will help your audience to digest what you have to say…and you will display the qualities of a good public speaker.

Express your love for the topic in from of Passion and enthusiasm: People have come to learn something from you. If you don’t smile and look passionate then it’s quite obvious that your audience is not bothered at all to take your delivery seriously. It is teh basic quality of a good public speaker should come from your end only. So remember that you as a public speaker should speak with a lot of passion. And let me tell you the meaning of passion is- The love for the topic and the power of belief.

Prepare and Rehearse well: Preparation and practice are the keys to your success; be it any public speaking opportunity. If you don’t know your subject well then it will become very difficult for you to substantiate your points to people in general. Be prepared. And do in-depth research on the topic that you want to share. And the same is to be complemented by proper practice. So rehearse until you get it next to prefect. Still there is not guarantee that your performance will be good. But you should push your limits and rehearse all the way.

Growing a strong vocabulary: To become a good public speaker, one must have a strong word bank. This will help you to speak fewer words and make more sense. So before the event, please try to work on some power packed words that can create some good impression.

Dress well to do well: One of the attributes of a good public speaker is you need to dress well as you will be more like a celebrity on the stage (of course the cynosure). So a proper dressing will add colors to your performance

And there are a lot of other points as well that you need to work on if you want to be a good public speaker. But for the time being you consider all the above mentioned points and make a start and overcome the public speaking fears.

Remember the qualities of a good public speaker and remember to become a good public speaker, you simply need to speak!!! So start doing. What are you waiting for…? make your own benchmark of effective public speaking.
